According to Elsie "hospitality was her watchword and no one ever went away hungry. She was a devout Christian, ever carrying out the Lord's instructions to look after the poor." (I quote Elsie several times, her words say it far better than I ever could.) She collected the money and purchased a bell for the Amma Methodist Church. When the county divided into townships (now called districts) this southeast part took the name of one of it's leading citizens and became GEARY District. The town and post office is named after one of their daughters, Amma, John and Phoebe GEARY were the parents of twelve children, but half of them died young. They also raised Elsie, whose given name is Phoebe Almira CARPER, d/o Charles and Amanda (Paxton) CARPER and niece to Phoebe. Their children were: Arthur W., Lectra A., Luther R., Patrick Vauley, Frederick W., Patton W., Charles Matthew, Amma J., Martha Leonora, William Alexander and Mytrle B.. -------------------- === GEDCOM Source === @R3612779@ Ancestry Family Trees Online publication - Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com.
