Photo William Ewing 1780–1857 Phebe Davisson (AKA Phoebe Davison) was the daughter of Daniel Davisson and Phebe Harrison. She was born in about 1848 or about 1850 (sources vary). She married John Ewing in "1768."

The records vary with the spelling of her first, maiden and married names and even her birth year. The records below reflect the spelling using in each of these docs.

Her gravestone was transcribed as: "M. (sic) Phebe Ewing, of Rockingham City, Virginia, died on 5 May 1838, aged 88 years" (based on the date and her age, she was born in about 1750). In the summer of 1981, Rev. H Middleton Raynal of Falling Spring Presbyterian Church and Jeanne Douglass Mean, copied this data from her gravestone at Falling Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

A recent cleaning of her marker reveal it clearly says: IN MEMORY of

rs M: PHEBE EWING OF ROCKINGHAM Cty, VA DIED MAY THE 5th 1838 AGED 88 YEARS

The Ewing Family Association, Chapter 32 on William Ewing (c1696-1794) of Rockingham Co., VA, page 21 includes data on IV. John Ewing ("abt 1748-Jun 1822 in Rockingham Co., VA") and his wife PHEBE DAVISON (AKA Davis), daughter of "Walter Davis"** and Phebe (AKA Phoebe) Harrison. A deposition taken in Augusta Co., VA on 13 Sep 1816, John's age was "76-77 (so born ca 1740?) and Phebe's as age 68 (so born ca 1748)." Also see Settlers of the Long Grey Trail, below.

They had Ewing children: Ann, 9 Jul 1770 -1845 (Thos Shanklin) in KY James, 1772/73, (Grace Shanklin, 1793) MO Mary, 8 Oct 1775, (Randolph Smith & John Pence/Pruce) William Davis, 15 Aug 1780 - 14 Jan 1857 (Eliz. Bryan) Hannah, 8 Dec 1782 - 1885 (James Mallory,1809) MO Elizabeth, 7 Nov 1786 (Harrison Connor) John Davidson, 2 Apr 1788 (Drusilla de LaFayette) Jesse, 2 Jul 1791 - 16 Jun 1807 *

On 17 May 1774, John and Phebe Ewing sold land, to Lawrence Bell. It was inherited by Phebe, from her maternal Harrison grandparents, Augusta County, VA Deed Book #20, page 246.

I found husband John "Ewin" died 5 May 1822 and is buried in Rockingham Co., VA, at Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He was aged 82, so born in about 1740. *Then I found buried at the same cemetery, his sons Jesse "Ewin," died 16 Jun 1807, and William "Ewing," 15 Aug 1780 - 14 Jan 1857, plus William's daughter Phoebe A Ewing, died 10 May 1893. John, William, his wife are buried in row 11, with some other Ewings, Benjamin, George, plus an A. Mallory. Phoebe is in row 4 with Nancy B and Rebecca D Ewing. The cemetery was surveyed in Oct 2002, by Martha Lee & Nettie Lee, who transcribed the markers. (Someone corrected the spelling on the 2 Findagrave sites for John Ewin and Jesse Ewin, but the markers were each recorded without a G ending. )

Also see John Houston Harrison's book, Settlers by the Long Grey Trail: Some Pioneers to Old Augusta County, VA and Their Descendants of the Family of Harrison and Allied Lines, 1935, Baltimore, MD, p 165-167 and 368 for more details. Augusta Co., VA Deed Book 20, p 248 was "patented to John Harrison, Jr., 10 Feb 1748, and bequeathed to Phoebe Davis(son), now wife of John Ewin, by said John's will."

The Falling Spring Presbyterian Church Chronological Roll of Active Members record book: line #11, 18-314, Phebe J. Ewing, (active member, received on this date) 11 Oct 1831, (1831 Roll) #E-8, (termination date) died 5 May 1838, aged 88. Buried at Falling Spring. (Mother of Rev. John Ewing?).

  • *Her parents were Daniel Davisson/Davison (not Walter Davis) and Phebe Harrison Davisson/Davison. After Daniel died, her mother married Thomas Moore. Her gravestone says "Phebe Moore, Consort of Thomas Moore." Her father is currently listed as Daniel "Davisson" with 2 S's, on his FaG site at the "Davison" Cemetery.

(Note: SRF kindly shared her name was "Phoebe Davisson," her mom was also spelled "Phoebe," her birth in Augusta Co., VA, and death in Rockbridge Co., VA. Also K believes she was born in Long Island, NY and died in Rockingham Co., VA. Hardesty's Encyclopedia, 1884 wrote that both John and Phebe were born in Rockingham Co., VA. Seeking valid sources for accuracy to honor her.)
