About Phyllis Mary Dees
Phyffe was born at 4 Elm Terrace, The Green, Wallsend, Northumberland. She died on the 2nd December 1920 at Faldonside, Melrose, Galashiels, Scotland as a result of menengitis caused by a fractured base of her skull suffered during a motor accident. The family (my grandparents, Phyffe and Roy) were travelling to Edinburgh to buy Phyffe's trousseau. Mater's maid had begged them not to go as she had forseen a tragedy (she was fey); my grandfather decided to leave the chauffeur, Moncaster, behind as Roy wanted to go into Edinburgh. He drove himself..
During the crash Phyffe protected Roy (although he lost an eye during the incident) but sustained a severe injury herself. It took Phyffe 3 months and 14 days to die. The doctor who certified her death was Dr. Charters Graham M.D., M.L.B.
She died at 8.10 am on the 2nd December 1920 at Faldonside, Melrose, Scotland. Her father was present at her death. He blamed himself for causing the accident.
She was buried in Lair 76 A5 in the Eastlands Cemetery, Galashiels, Scotland on the 4th December 1920.
Phyffe's fiance Lionel.........? a surgeon committed suicide some years later.
