Sergeant Piet van Bekkum (1961 - 2012)
Brief overview:
Piet (51), a traffic officer, was shot dead, at point blank range, by a gang, of between 5 and 7 robbers, during a jewellery heist at the Wonderpark Shopping Centre, Pretoria, on 19th July 2012. Piet was sitting on his bike outside the centre when he was confronted by the robbers, who shot him in the chest, and stole his service revolver.
They escaped, with an unknown amount of cash and jewellery, in a black pick-up truck. The robbers abandoned the black pick-up in Akasia, reportedly stolen from Hillbrow in Joburg on Wednesday night, and fled in a white minibus.

- "Sergeant Piet Von Bekkum's name would be inscribed on the Wall of Remembrance at the metro police headquarters, a service would be held at the Dutch Reformed Church on the corner of Berglaan and Heinrich streets in Wonderpark at 10:00 on 25th July. The procession will then leave to the Heather Dale Cemetery in Brits where he will be buried,' said metro police spokesperson Lekgantshi Tleane.
