Women in the cooperative

When the cooperative was founded, there were indeed worldwide have long been a women's movement that fought for equality and women's voting rights, but it took until 1918 before the women in the German Reich received universal suffrage. In Switzerland, this should even take until 1971.

One of the first pioneers and leaders in the German women's movement was our founding and board member Dr. Elisabeth Altmann-Gottheiner. Born in 1874 in Berlin, she had studied in London, Berlin and Zurich. In Zurich she earned her doctorate and was next to Ricarda Huch, Rosa Luxembourg and Marienbaum the few doctoral her time. Together with Dr. Marie Berneys, Julie Bassermann and Alice Bensheim, whose husband was also a founding and board member of our cooperative, she founded the Social School for Women in Mannheim.

Dr. Altmann-Gottheiner was groundbreaking in many international women's congresses and purposeful. Above all, they fought in the field of social welfare with all the energy of her powerful personality. But your interest was also the cultural currents in Mannheim and so it is not surprising that they also gave a presentation on the garden city idea and its impact on women in front of the Mannheimer women's organizations. On the board of the International Women's Union, she devoted herself particularly the workers question, fought for the rights of women in their professional lives to their equality and a better mother protection. 1924 she was awarded the designation of Associate Professor. That there is an "Elisabeth Altmann-Gottheiner Street" in Mannheim, may fill us with pride, because she was one of us.

In the inaugural meeting of the cooperative Dr. Elisabeth Altmann-Gottheiner was elected to the first board of the cooperative, the she belonged to 1922nd It must have been a very special woman. In 1930 she died after a serious illness in Mannheim.

The New Mannheimer Zeitung reported from 10/23/1930, held at the funeral of Dr. Berneys obituary:

"One of the rarest female personalities has passed away. (...) Who is countered this woman, was immediately taken prisoner by the main features of their lives - quiet intelligence and noble humanity ".
