About Prof. Dr. Johan Frederik Reitz

Biography Prof.Dr.Johan Frederik Reitz Born in Castle Braunfels, his education began at the age of four when he was entrusted to the theologian Zepper. In 1702 he entered his father's Latin school in Siegen. After his father moved to Terborg, in Holland he was sent to Wesel in Germany for further education. From 1708 till 1711 he was educated in the house of the barrister Johan van Stockum, here he received tuition in Latin, Greek, Geography and the arts of music and drawing. After his father had founded his Latin School in Wesel, he finished his own education there as well as assisting in the teaching of the boarders. This he did with his cousin Johan Heinrich Reitz (1696-1766), who later became his brother-in-law. He then added French to his subjects as well as Mathematics and Architecture. In 1714 he moved to Utrecht at the invitation of the Dowager Princess Ernestine Charlotte of Nassau-Siegen, becoming tutor to her grandson Friedrich Wilhelm II. While he coached this prince, he continued his own studies at the University of Utrecht, studying medicine and attending lectures in Anatomy and Surgery and, later, also Physics, Chemistry, Law and Literature. In 1719 he was appointed Praeceptor at the Latin School in Rotterdam. In 1720 he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Utrecht. In 1724 he left Rotterdam as he had been appointed Co-Rector of the Latin School in Utrecht. In 1740 he was promoted Rector and in addition he was nominated in 1745 as Rector in Amsterdam. However, he remained living in Utrecht where he was nominated as Professor-Extraordinary in Rhetorics and Poetry. In 1747 he received a full Professorship by appointment of the Stadhouder, Prince Willem IV, with the chair of History and Eloquentia. In 1750 he became Rector-Magnificus of the University of Utrecht for the first time, and became Professor Emeritus in 1769.
