About Prof. Dr. Johann Heinrich Buff

Buff was the son of the Dutch captain Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Buff and his wife Elisabeth Charlotte Lamprecht. Since he first had the intention to pursue a practical career, he came first in the possession of his relatives (see above) located Kestnersche factory to Thann in Alsace one . Soon, however, he moved back to pure science, and he went to Paris . There he sat with Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac continued his experimental work, which is now in a different direction of assumptions. His preference was now physically - chemical boundary problems. These studies led - Buff was after several years of research period returned to Giessen - 1830 to teach.

1834 Buff took a reputation as a lecturer in physics, Machine Design and Mechanical Technology at the Higher Vocational School (Polytechnic) in Kassel , and worked there with Robert Bunsen together.Four years later was appointed the (re) as a full professor of physics at the University of Giessen in 1837 as a successor to the late George Gottlieb Schmidt . There Buff started with Justus Liebig from 1847 annual reports on the progress of chemistry to be returned. Together with his colleague Friedrich Zamminer and Hermann Kopp published Buff 1857, the textbook of physical and theoretical chemistry, the first interface between physics and chemistry as separate subjects, the auswies.

At the age of 73 years died Prof. Dr. Johann Heinrich Buff on 24 Dezember 1878 in Gießen. December 1878 in Giessen. His grave is in the old cemetery .
