The worst communication was in a letter from MUDr. B. Epstein, writing English from Prague to his relatives in England and America, I cite from his letter and in parentheses are the names of the people he writes about. The letter was dated September 27, 1945.
"... Immediately after our arrival in Oswiecim on December 1st, 1942, my dear Otty was murdered in one of the notorious gas chambers, I received only definitive news about her after eight months of anxiety and futile enquiries. (Otty, wife of Dr. Epstein, was born Eckstein's daughter, Anna Eckstein, who was my grandfather's sister Schwarz).
As far as the fate of the rest of our dear ones is concerned, I will tell you everything quite candidly, as I do not think there is any point in keeping quiet about those facts. Charles (my uncle) was in Lodz until September 1944, and was then brought to Oswiecim, where I used to see him quite a lot. He was in very bad shape, did not look well at all, and was hard of hearing. Towards the middle of October he and the rest of the camp, with the exception of ten doctors, were taken to Germany. I have not heard anything from him since. Because of his bad physical condition, I do not think I can honestly and truthfully give you much hope of his return, as there is no news whatsoever about him so far.
In Oswiecim I was told that Dagmar (Charles's wife, born Storz) and Jenicek (her son) were taken to the gas chamber immediately upon arrival. I did not tell Karel as I did not want to spoil his hope of reunion ....
My dear mother-in-law, Aunt Anna, was brought to Terezin at the beginning of 1943 and died there of starvation. Ema (Dubová, née Ecksteinová, Anna's daughter), Oskar (Dub) and their children Eva and Petr were sent to Terezín a bit later and were deported to Oswiecim a few weeks before Mother died. On December 13th, 1943 Oskar died of pneumonia, Ema, Eva, and Peter, whom I saw several times were taken to the gas chamber on March 9th, 1944 ... "
