About Pte. Charles Ebenezer Bannatyne

Tauranga bushman Charles Ebenezer Bannatyne worked for Gamman's Mill. During World War I he was killed in action at Ypres, Belgium on 20 December 1917. Charles Ebenezer Bannatyne was born at Warkworth in Auckland, on 8 October 1882. His parents were John and Emily Mary Bannatyne (née Pulham) who had married in Warkworth on 27 August 1877. Charles worked as a bushman for Gamman's Mill at Omanawa Falls in Tauranga. He enlisted on 7 December 1916. Charles was killed in action at Ypres in Belgium on 20 December 1917. He was aged 35. Charles is remembered on the Buttes New British Cemetery (NZ) Memorial in Polygon Wood, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium and in the Auckland War Memorial Museum, World War 1 Hall of Memories. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created by the Tauranga WW100 Committee. It comprised 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I.
