John Davis was born on 30 July 1885 (reg. 1885/197) at Sandymount on the Otago Peninsula in the Dunedin area in New Zealand's South Island. He was one of 12 children born to Michael Davis (1855 - 1928) and Janet Davis (nee Cowan) (1861 - 1940) who married at Sandymount on 8 June 1877. John joined the Otago Regiment during World War I. He was killed in action on 7 June 1917 during the Battle of Messines. John was buried in the Saint Quentin Cabaret Military Cemetery [II. L. 12.].
