1850 Census puts Ezekial Bailey living in the home of John and Martha Edwards. States he is age 17, Male, White, Laborer. Page 406, House/Family#336/348. Next door to George W. Phillips' family, where Winny is daughter. Bastard Bonds, State of North Carolina, Yancey County, NC. Ezekial H. Bailey bonded for $500 to Sarah (Sallie) Higgins for maintenance of Bastard Child. Signed and sealed by L. S. Phillips and S. B. Briggs, November 2, 1876. E. H. Bailey signed with "X". Bastard Child was Elmira Higgins. Marriage records for Yancey County show that Ezekiel H. Bailey married Margaret Higgins, sister of above mentioned Sarah Higgins, in January of 1876! Married one sister then impregnated the other one! NOTE: E. H. Bailey is Julia Anne Bailey Phillips' father and L.S. Phillips is her father-in-law! He sued for divorce from Margaret Higgins Bailey in 1879 and was granted custody of Isaac Ervin Bailey. Ezekiel then married his "housekeeper" Mary Stamper. According to Lloyd Bailey: These Baileys lived way back "in the sticks" in Egypt Twp., and were very "friendly" with their neighbors spouses...and it is very hard to get them straightened out. G, Enl. on 7/11/62 at Burnsville age 28, 5'6", farmer, born in Claiborn Co., Tenn. Deserted from Clinton, Tenn. on 6/1/63. Re- joined on 7/17/64. Pres. on 8/31/64. Res. Yancey Co. Erroneously listed on the 1890 Union Veterans Census for Yancey Co., NC, which indicates he served 3 yrs. Res. of Bee Log, NC in 1890.
