About Pvt. George Walker Brown, (USA)
He was a private Union soldier in the 1st Regiment, Rhode Island Cavalry in the American Civil War, farmer, carpenter, contractor, and builder. "He was an original "forty-niner." He relates many interesting anecdotes concerning his experiences to California and the voyage there and back. When he returned he came in a Schooner around Cape Horn. He was called home by illness in the family, and upon arriving he resumed his occupation as carpenter, contractor, and builder. He was identified by the former well-known firm of French, McKenzie & Co. of this city."
