Mr. George Washington died yesterday afternoon at four-forty o'clock. He was one of Alexandria's oldest citizens. Mr. Washington was stricken with apoplexy early morning. He was found in bed in a helpless condition. He had been complaining a great deal of late of pains in the head, and it is said by a friend that he remarked only a few days ago that he had not long to live. He was quite a young man when he came to this city from Westmoreland, where he was born seventy-two years ago. Just after he came here, he was engaged in the commission business, under the firm of Washington & Herbert. At the breaking out of the late war, he joined the Black Horse Cavalry. After the war, he came back and opened the commission business again, but owing to the depression of business several years ago, he abandoned it. He filled a position on the Internal Revenue Service under Mr. Cleveland's first administration and when that gentleman was re-elected, he was appointed Stamp Clerk of the Internal Revenue Service in this city by the late Ham Shepard, which office he held until his death. Mr. Washington was a son of Lawrence Washington, of Westmoreland, whose father was a brother of General George Washington. He leaves a widow and several children. The Washington Post - June 17, 1896.

Mosby's Cavalry Regiment, formerly the 43rd Battalion, was organized in December, 1864. The Battalion was formed in June, 1863, with five companies, later increased to eight. The unit served behind Federal lines in Northern Virginia and was the most effective command of its kind. The enemy forces were never safe and the area became known as "Mosby's Confederacy".
