Obituary

from Honesdale Democrat - April 23, 1851 On the 11th Inst. at the residence of his son, in Bucking ham township, in the 94th year of his age, Mr Gideon Woodmansee, a soldier of the revolution and among the first settlers of Preston township. A history of his services as a soldier cannot not now be given. Suffice it to say that he fought for his country and endured great hardships, being a prisoner eleven months. About six years ago he was called to part with a tender wife, with whom he had lived for sixty years.

The writer of this has known him for more than thirty yeas, and it may truly be said of him that those who knew him best, loved him most. As a neighbor, he was kind and obliging. No stranger was sent empty away. Being of a cheerful disposition, he made his fireside a place of delight. As a father, he was indulgent, as a husband, tender and affectionate, His mind remained unimpaired until a short time previous to his death.

On Sunday the 13th, a funeral discourse was delivered by Rev. Mr. Blakely, and the remains of the deceased were deposited in the tomb, there to rest. "Until the last trump shall sound which bids the sleeper rise." He served in the Revoluntionary War for nine months July 1780 in New Bedford, MA, he enlisted as a private in Captain Blaisdell's Company, Colonel Wigglesworth's Massachusetts Regiment; he served wtih General Washington at Valley Forge during the winter of great privation; on March 22, 1819 he was granted a pension of 48 a month. On Oct. 7, 1781, in Swansea, MA he married Almy (sic) Carter.
