Henry enlisted in Co E, of the 21st Infantry Wisconsin Volunteers at Stockbridge, Calumet Co., Wisconsin . He died at Perryville Hospital of wounds received at the Battle of Chaplin Hills.
Henry was a member of the Brothertown Indian Nation.. His father, John Johnson, was prominent in the affairs of the Brothertown tribe and was titled "Esquire Johnson" in honor of his service. His mother was Mercy Thomas. His ancestry had Mohegan and Narragansett roots.
He left a wife, Avis Sampson Johnson and three sons, Miles Marcellus, Ancel Avery, Winfield Henry and a daughter Mercy L.
