About Pvt. James Porter Campbell, (USA)
The son of James Bowman & Sophia (Snyder) Campbell, in 1860 he was a laborer living with and/or working for the George Koch family in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at Camp Cameron, Washington DC, October 25, 1861, and mustered into federal service there October 29 as a private with Co. C, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). Captured at Tompkinsville, Kentucky, July 9, 1862, he was paroled that day, and returned to duty following formal exchange. He honorably discharged at term's end December 24, 1864.
He married Susan Hutchinson and fathered Isabella (b. 02/28/69 - married Charles Gilbert), Sophia (b. 02/??/78), and James Porter (b. 04/07/80). Cause of his death is listed as "uremia."* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Apr 25 2021, 15:58:48 UTC
