John S. Fambrough was the son of Thomas M. Fambrough and wife Elizabeth Shaw. He was born in Greene County, Georgia in 1815. He married Julita "Julia" Landrum in 1841 and had four known children. He died in 1863, a casualty of the Civil War.
John Fambrough, along with sons Albert and Marius, enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1863 and were assigned to Company A, 9th Battalion, Georgia Artillery. His battalion was also known as the Atlanta Leyden Artillery (named for its commanding officer, Maj. Austin Leyden of Atlanta). John was captured during the battle at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, on September 9, 1863. He was sent to the Louisville, Kentucky, Military Prison on September 11, 1863, and, on September 24, transferred to Camp Douglas, Illinois. John died at Camp Douglas on October 15, 1863, from a lung infection. He was buried at City Cemetery, grave #739, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. The graves were later moved to Oak Wood Cemetery. His name is misspelled as Fambraugh on the monument erected at Oak Wood Cemetery.
Of the sons who enlisted with John, Albert made it home but Marius was also captured at Cumberland Gap, and died in 1864 at Camp Douglas.
