• "ELY, Lewis, West Springfield, Private, Captain Enoch Chapin's Co of Minute Men which marched 20 April 1775, service 8 days, also Captain Enoch Chapin's Co, Col Timothy Danielson's regt; Muster roll date- Aug 1, 1775; enlisted April 28, 1775; service, 3 months, 10 days. Also company return dated Camp at Roxbury October 6, 1775; also, order for bounty coat or its equivalent in money dated Roxbury October 26, 1775."

Soldier of the American Revolution. He was the first settler of Deerfield in 1799. HYe left the place of his nativity & submitted to the privations of a wilderness for the advancement of children and friends. He lived to see their growing prospects repening into reality, and when consigned to dust, the silent eloquence of all bespeaks, here lies our father. (on back of stone)
