Biography

Francis Lovejoy was born in Andover, MA and was member of that town's train band in 1757. He is listed in "Massachusetts Colonial Soldiers," vol. 96, pg. 454 as having served in the Canada Expedition in 1759. Francis moved from Andover to Amherst, NH about the time of his marriage in 1765 and was of Amherst at the time of that marriage. He signed the Association Test at Amherst, NH. He was a Revolutionary War soldier and enlisted in September, 1776. He served in Col. Baldwin's regiment at the Battle of White Plains, NY and enlisted again 5 March 1781 to fill a quota at Amherst of 3 year men.

In Virgil D. White's "Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files," pg. 2125-26, it states that Francis Lovejoy (BLW #976-100-27) served on the New Hampshire line. On 13 Jan 1820 it was stated that Daniel Lovejoy was "one of the brothers & one of the heirs" of the deceased soldier; a Cyrus Baldwin of Fayette, Kennebec Co., ME referred to the soldier as late of Amherst, NH; brother Daniel signed the p.o.a. on 27 Nov. 1820 to one Silas Bates. Since there was no brother named Daniel, this was likely reference to Francis's son, Rev. Daniel Lovejoy.

Francis and his family removed to Albion, ME about 1790. He was likely one of the first settlers in the area, although his son, Rev. Daniel Lovejoy, indicated in Congregation Church records that there may have been about six families there in 1790 ("Albion on the Narrow Gauge," Ruth Croby Wiggin, 1964). At Albion, the Lovejoy's settled near a large pond, still known as Lovejoy Pond in 1930. Albion was organized as Freetown Plantation in 1802, incorporated as Fairfax, ME in 1804 and renamed Albion in 1824.

Francis Lovejoy, his wife, son Daniel and other family members are buried at the Lovejoy Cemetery overlooking Lovejoy Pond in Albion, ME. The cemetery has been purchased by Colby College which is responsible for its maintenance. (From "Albion on the Narrow Gauge," Ruth Crosby Wiggin, 1964). An alternate date of death is 12 Oct. 1818, per "The Lovejoy Genealogy."
