About Pvt. Seth Green Bowen, CSA

BOWEN, SETH PVT Co. F. 50th. ALA d. 02/20/64

Residence was not listed; Seth Green Bowen enlisted October 7, 1861 and was with Company "F", 50th Reg't.,Alabama Infantry. He was a private with Capt. N.N. Clements Company of Infantry. The muster roll lists SG Bowen as age 32, farmer, 6'2" with light hair and gray eyes. He was captured at Mission Ridge, Tennessee, November 26, 1863. He died at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois on February 20, 1864. He died of small pox.

Seth Green Bowen was the oldest of 11 sons born to Stephen & Permelia Killingsworth Bowen. Six of their sons served in the Civil War. Along with Seth were: John H. Bowen, Private in Confederate Company F, 41st Reg of Alabama. He joined April 1, 1861, and died January 2, 1863, and is believed to be buried in a mass grave at the battlefield, and later moved to a cemetery in Murfreesboro. Stephen Samuel Bowen, killed or died from disease in 1863. Joseph Newton Bowen, paroled May 1, 1865, & Charles Columbus Bowen, Private in Captain Burgins Company of the 26th Alabama Infantry Reg't. His father, Stephen Bowen filed a death claim 10.31.1894, no other information available. James Tinsley Bowen, he mustered in 6 October 1861 and was paroled on 01 May 1865.

Seth Green Bowen was born 1829 in Henry County, Georgia and married Ila Minerva, Jan 7, 1850 in Tuscaloosa Alabama. She was born 1830 in Tuscaloosa Alabama and died between 1861 and 1927.

Their children: Varshus Bowen born 15 July 1854; Permelia Blanche Bowen born 1852, Luther Bowen born 1856; Mary Elizabeth Bowen born 22 March 1858; Frances Mattie Bowen born 1861 and Stephen Jasper Bowen born 1864.

Seth had 10 brothers and one sister, Sarah Frances (Sis) Bowen Jennings.
