Rear Admiral William Harrington Leahy was born on 27 October 1904 in San Francisco, California. He appeared in the census on 29 January 1920 in Washington, D.C. He was the son of Fleet Admiral William Daniel Leahy, United States Navy. He graduated in 1927 from the US Naval Academy. He was an Ensign in the US Navy in 1930. As a Captain, he was Acting Shipyard Command, Norfolk Naval Shipyard between 30 June 1953 and 11 August 1953 in Norfolk, Virginia. As a Rear Admiral, he was Shipyard Commander, Norfolk Naval Shipyard between 30 June 1958 and 29 June 1960 in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia. He retired on 1 June 1961. He died on 12 May 1986 in Chevy Chase, Montgomery County, Maryland. Rear Admiral William Harrington Leahy and Elizabeth Marbury Beale were married on 23 July 1927 in Georgetown, District of Columbia. Elizabeth Marbury Beale (daughter of Robert Somervell Beale and Sophia Clarkson Stuart) was born on 25 May 1904. She appeared in the census on 12 Jan 1920 in Washington, D.C. She died on 4 May 1987 in Chevy Chase, Montgomery County, Maryland. Rear Admiral William Harrington Leahy and Elizabeth Marbury Beale had the following children: Louise Harrington Leahy (born between May 1928 and Apr 1929) and Robert Beale Leahy.

- ************************************* A Sentimental Journey Admiral Leahy spent D-Day, June 6, 1944, in his home town of Hampton, Iowa. This well-publicized “sentimental journey” was part of the deception efforts surrounding the Allied invasion of Europe. The idea was to lull any German agents in Washington, D.C. or elsewhere in the US into believing that the operation would not take place while such an important officer was out of the capital.

Biography
Leahy was born on October 27, 1904 in San Francisco, California. His father was Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy. Leahy married Elizabeth Marbury Beale on July 23, 1927 and had two children, Louise Harrington (named after her grandmother) and Robert Beale.
He died on May 12, 1986 in Chevy Chase, Maryland and is buried with Elizabeth and his parents at Arlington National Cemetery.
Career
Leahy graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1927. Later in his career he served as commander of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard from 1958 - 1960. His retirement was effective as of June 1, 1961.

United States Navy Admiral. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1927, as an Ensign and served in the US Navy East Coast Fleet. He served in World War II and after the war served as Captain of the Shipyard Command, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Virginia, from June, 1953 to June, 1960.
