Dr. R.S. Hirsch was born in 1849 in Ladenburg, Germany. He came to America in his seventeenth year,landing in New York City, in 1865. After attending school for a time in New York, he located in Detroit, Michigan, in the year 1867. In 1870 he located at Lincoln, Neb., and from there came to Seward in 1875. Here he married Louisa Jane Hitchock and they located on a homestead near the present site of Gresham in the year 1876. To this union were born eight children: Charles Robert, Ida May, Herman Julius, Nellie Leopoldina, Albert Henry, Joseph Otto Leopold, Harry Arthur Jones[should be James?], and Adolph Alonzo. Two of these, Ida May, who died in infancy, and Harry Arthur James, who died at the age of 9 years, have preceeded him to the better land.

In 1887 he left the homestead, moving to Ulysses, Nebr., where in connection with his profession he conducted a pharmacy. He remained in Ulysses until 1884 when he and his family returned to the homestead where they spent another three years. From the homestead he moved to Gresham in the year 1887, and there lived for 25 years. From Gresham he came to Seward where he lived until his death which occured October 29, 1919. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, six children, and eighteen grandchildren. The wife, Mrs. R.S.Hirsch, of Seward; the sons, Charles R. of North Loup; Herman J. of Talmage; Albert H. of Denver, Colo.; Joseph O. of Stossburg [possibly Stromsbug?]); and Adolph A. of Coalings, Calif.; and the daughter, Mrs. Dr. S.C. Harris, or (should be 'of') Gresham.

Dr. Hirsch was a faithful attendant and an ardent worker in lodge work. He was always found at his post of duty whenever it was possible. He joined the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in the early eighties. He was also in his fifieth year as a Mason. During these fifty years he became a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Mystic Schrine.

Dr. Hirsch was held in high esteem by the many people who knew him for so many years in this part of Nebraska. As physician pharmacist, lodge member, and citizen he won friends who will long remember him.

Short funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday at noon by the Rev. L.J. Lewis, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and also in the Methodist church at Gresham at 2:30 p.m.

He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Gresham by his brothers of the Masonic lodge. The Lodge of Gresham conducted the service and a number of the Seward Masons also participated.

(the above OBIT does not indicate Robert Hirsch was Jewish but according to his granddaughter, Holly Clapper, Robert was Jewish. Service by the Reverends were done mostly likely more for the benefit of Louisa rather than Robert as she was apparently a Methodist--yet in rural Nebraska at that time most only had one form of worship or religious entity in the town. In other words, there was usually only one type of Christian denomination that had a church in the town, depending upon the size of the town. The nearest Jewish synagogue would have been either Lincoln or Omaha) From my personal family information Robert was more a Secular Jew in practice. His mother and father are buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Ladenburg, Germay)
