Rav Kalmanowitz was rabbi of several communities in Europe. With the assistance of his son, Rav Avrohom Kalmanowitz (rabbi of Tykocin and, later, Rosh Yeshiva of Mir in Brooklyn), he and his family made it to the Holy Land, and he lived in Jerusalem. He authored the ethical work Lev Aharon.
