Daughter of Thomas McKie and his wife Rosanna MacIntyre.

She was Scot-Irish and came as a child with her parents to America and settled in North Carolina. Her father served in the Burke County, North Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War.

Rachael married first about 1779, probably Burke Co., NC to John Brixey. They had three children and then he died at sea in a storm.

After the Revolution, between about 1783 and 1787, the McKie family moved to Elbert Co., NC. Rachael and her husband and children either moved with them or Rachael joined them with the children after John died.

She was a widow with three young children when she married second 10 Nov 1787, probably Elbert Co., GA to nineteen-year-old Barnabas Strickland.

The 1790, 1800, and 1810 census records for Georgia were burned during the Civil War, but Rachael and Barnabas had four children who survived to adulthood.

About 1804, Rachael's daughter Jane Brixey married in Madison Co., GA to Josiah Powell.

In Jan 1805, her son Thomas Brixey married in South Carolina to Susanna Clark.

About 1805, Rachael's son John Brixey married in Elbert Co., GA to Elizabeth Robertson.

About 1810, Rachael and Barnabas's daughter Mary Pauline married in Madison Co., GA to Philip Ware.

Sometime between about 1813 and 1818, Barnabas went west to Missouri with their youngest child, Ephraim B., who was still a teenager. There is no evidence that Rachel ever went to Missouri or left Georgia. Barnabas took three slaves with him who were listed as his property on the 1819 Franklin Co. tax roll. It's not known why Barnabas decided to come west, but it was a permanent separation for him and Rachael. It's not known if she ever saw her son Ephraim again.

Between 1814 and 1820, her son John Brixey moved his family to Tennessee.

1817 - Rachael's daughter Jane Brixey Powell moved to Mississippi with her husband and children.

Oct 1818 - Rachael and Barnabas's son Solomon married in Madison Co., GA.

Sep 1819, Madison Co., GA, their youngest daughter Rosanna married Bennett Sorrells. It appears that Rachael was living with the newlyweds in 1820; it's possible that Bennett moved in with her and Rosanna:

Researcher Debi Sullivan has provided the following on Rachael's first husband:

"From Brixey Bullein, Vol 1, No. 1, 1991, page 5 and page 23. John Brixey came to the Coloines from London, England 6 July, 1773 aboard the ship "Snow Sally" captained by Stephen Jones. He contracted to work for Daniel Dudley for 4 years. Contract was recorded in Philadelphia, Pa on __ September, 1773. (He apparently failed to live up to his bargain and ran away and a reward was offered for his return.) Arrived at the Port of Philadephia on July 06, 1773. Information in Darin Rase website notes: referenc to "John Brixey, the Immigrant," Mayors Court Indenture Book, Pennsylvania Census (1770?) and Pennsylvania Gazette (week of October 4, 1773). Land Grant #335 - July 28, 1778 in Burke County, North Carolina was filed for John Brixey and on 28 September, 1778 a survey of the land was ordered. (300 arces.) Other notes: John Oliver Brixey was born October 10, 1750, Ringwood, Hampshire, England. He left England on the ship, Snow Sally, headed by Captain Stephen Jones and arrived in America at the Port of Philadelphia as an indentured servant, July 06, 1773. Indentured for years to Daniel Dudley of Burlington County, New Jersey. There are claims that his master Mr. Dudley advertised for him as a runaway and offered a reward for his return. John Oliver was the “First Known” Brixey of this Brixey line in the American Colonies. He was granted 300 acres in Burke County, North Carolina. On 28 July 1778 Land Grant No. 335, Burke County, North Carolina, was filed for John Brixey and on same day that year, a survey of this land was ordered. In about 1784 (1789) it is reported that John died at sea, perhaps drowning while in route to England to check on an inheritance. (Data submitted by several people, to Ancestral File, lists parents as Thomas Brixey born 1724, England and Susanna Clarke born about 1728 England. Another source lists John Oliver’s parents as William and Mary Brixey. Fannie Barsha Brixey Clifton’s book states that “John was born 1750, died 1836; believed to be one of 3 brothers who came from England. John and his wife were born in Ireland. He married Rachael Mackie, born 1763, 1841."

[source?] "Philip Ware died in Danielsville, Madison Cty, GA while on a visit to his sister Elizabeth, wife of James Long. On reaching her home he was violently ill, dying within a few hours. Before he was buried his sister's husband was stricken with the same disease, dying in a short time. The two men were buried the same day. Soon the servants of the house were sick snd several died. It was pronounced to be cholera. It seems that Philip had contacted the disease on his way from Alabama to Gerogia, barely reaching his sister's house before succumbing. It was thought at first that he had eaten fish or some food that had poisoned him but after others had contacted the disease it was decided to be cholera."
