Hereinafter cited as The Complete Peerage. ___________________________________________________________________________ Geoffrey Ridel was a judge, eminent for his knowledge of the law. In 1106 he was sent as a Commissioner, with Ralph Bassett and other leading men, to settle a controversy as to the right of sanctuary at Ripon. He also witnessed a Charter of Henry 1st at Cornbury, and one of the Counts of Meulan. He was one of the assessors in a trial held before the Queen at Winchester between 1108 and 1113, and is a witness to a charter granted by Henry 1st before his departure from England in 1116. Geoffrey Ridel was lord of Wittering, Northants, and held Pightesley in the same county. He drowned in the 'White Ship', with William and Richard, sons of King Henry, Richard, Earl of Chester, and others on the 7th of the Calends of December, 1119/20, in their passage from Hareflew, in Normandy to England.
