About Randal William McDonnell, 1st and last Marquess of Antrim

On the death of the 1st Marquess of Antrim the Marquessate of Antrim and the titles he inherited from his father became extinct and he was succeeded in the 1785 Earldom of Antrim by his eldest daughter, Lady Anne MacDonnell.

  • 19 Jun 1785 Viscount Dunluce and Earl of Antrim, with a special remainder failing heirs male of his body to his daughters in order of seniority and the heirs male of their bodies respectively
  • 18 Aug 1789 Marquess of Antrim, but with no such special remainder
  • He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Antrim between 1768 and 1775.
  • He held the office of Sheriff of County Antrim in 1771.
  • He succeeded to the title of 6th Earl of Antrim on 13 October 1775.
  • He succeeded to the title of 6th Viscount Dunluce, co. Antrim on 13 October 1775.
  • He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) on 5 May 1779.
  • On 5 February 1783 he was nominated to the Order of St. Patrick, but was never invested, being unwilling to resign from the Order of the Bath.
