Ranveig Torgjersdatter Morkve was born in Vaaler, Norway, in 1847. She came to the US and married her first husband, Ole Olson Gavle, with whom she had several children; one of them, Emma, married Paul Irgens Dybdahl Ostby, son of the Reverend Paul Gjermundsen Ostby.

Ole Gavle passed away in 1907, and Paul Ostby's first wife Goro died a year later. Ranveig married the Reverend in 1909. Effectively, she went from being Paul I. D. Ostby's mother-in-law to his stepmother with that simple contract!

Despite being Paul's junior by some 11 years, Ranveig died only 3 years later of appendicitis, in 1911. Paul did not remarry, and died in 1918. Though he and Ranveig are buried in the same cemetery, they do not lie side-by-side - rather, Ranveig is buried by her first husband, Ole, and Paul's buried next to his first wife, Goro (Thornby) Ostby.
