When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Rear Admiral Claude S. Gillette (then a Captain) was in charge of the Industrial Department at the Pearl Harbor Naval Base. One of the most experienced naval engineers in the service, he was in charge of the tremendous effort required to salvage damaged ships and facilities.
