Research on Ezekiel Bennett, Sr.

by Jim Bennett Ezekiel’s father John, born about 1750 in North Carolina, lived in Whitley County, Kentucky in 1805 but, like his son, may have moved around in the Cumberland Mountains with wife, Rebecca, and lived early on in Tennessee. He was listed again in the 1820 Kentucky Census in Whitley and Estill Counties.

For the consideration of $250, John Bennett purchased land in nearby Clay County March 31, 1812 from Daniel Webb and his wife Elizabeth on Quick Sand Creek.[1] The transaction lists John as then being from Estill County.

Witnesses to the transaction were listed as Jacob John, David Ross, Wiley Cope and John Ross, Jr. Could either of the Ross men have been related to Rebecca Denee Ross, John’s wife?

Interestingly John Bennett shows up in the 1810 Cumberland County, Kentucky census with a wife and seven children. That’s the number of children John and Rebecca had. Cumberland County lies just across the state line from Clay County, Tennessee.

John must have moved to Estill County because he is listed there in the 1820 Census in the Ravenna community.

Their children other than Ezekiel are thought to have included:

John Bennett Jr., born in Elk Valley, Campbell, Tennessee in 1780 and died November 2, 1860 in Williamsburg, Whitley County, Kentucky. He married ____________ Rose.

Levi Bennett, born 1787 in Elk Valley who married Nancy Harp December 1, 1808 in Whitley County. He died between 1860 and 1870. Levi served in the Revolution and is listed as a private on the roll of Captain Ambrose Arthur's Company of Infantry of the Kentucky Militia, Detatched. His date of muster is March 20, 1813 and engaged September 20, 1813. Capt. Arthur's company was formed in Barbourville as early as March 1812 and marched during the spring of 1813 and was under the command of Colonel William Dudley.[2] Dudley was killed following the Seige of Ft. Meigs while pursuing Indians and only some 200 of his troops escaped.

Edward Bennett, born about 1795, also in Elk Valley who married Elizabeth “Betsy” Rose in 1814 and after she died, Mary Prewitt Petry August 8, 1849. He died January 26, 1880 in Whitley County.

Rebecca Bennett, born 1796, died in November, 1879. She married Jesse Powers March 24, 1812 in Knox County, Kentucky.

Amos (Amous) Bennett, born about 1800 in Elk Valley who married Sarah “Sally” Hamblin July 2, 1818. He died in June, 1870.

Thomas Bennett, born 1802, died in 1910.

There were several other Bennetts in the same area during this time period including Michael, born 1788, and Solomon, born between 1785 and 1794, who may have been a part of the same family, possibly cousins. Michael died before 1890 and Solomon in 1810.
