BIOGRAPHY Renaud VI was the son of Renaud V de Pons, vicomte de Turenne et de Carlat, and a daughter of Guillaume Flotte, seigneur de Revel, chancellor of France. He was vicomte de Carlat (which he sold in 1392) and Turennem seigneur de Ribérac, de Montfort, d'Aillac, de Carlux, de Plassac, des îles de Marennes, d'Oléron, de Saint Mégrin, de Virouol et de Châteasu Renaud, guardian of the treaties of Guyenne, knight banneret, and was called 'cousin of the king'. He was one of the most famous soldier-diplomats of the 14th century.

On 8 November 1364 or 1365 Renaud married Marguerite de Perigord. Their son Renaud was killed on 28 September 1396 at the Battle of Nicopolis in Bulgaria, aged 25; he did not leave progeny.

On 17 January 1411 Renaud married Marguerite de La Trémouille, daughter of Guy VI de La Trémouille, comte de Guines, and Marie de Sully, dame heritiere de Craon. Of their two sons, Jacques I would have progeny. Marguerite died in 1416, and that year Renaud married Catherine de Montberon. Their daughter Marie married the knight Jean Gaudin, seigneur de Martigné-Fercahut, d'Assé et de Lavardin, but no progeny is recorded from her marriage.

The king's lieutenant in Poitou, de Saintonge and Angoumois, Renaud held numerous titles obtained through the alliances of his forebears with various noble families. In the midst of the Hundred Years War he allied himself with the English at different times, leaving and rejoining the English side four times in 1369 and 1370.

In 1371 he returned permanently to the king of France and fought with distinction during the campaigns of Poitou, the Saintonge and Perigord, alongside Bertrand du Guesclin, constable of France. In August 1372 he besieged Soubise, then Pons in late September of that year when the city surrendered to the armies of Charles V, king of France. Charles then conceded that he owed Guienne to Renaud, and later Charles VI called him 'the father protector and guardian of the two Aquitaines'.

In 1381 Renaud was appointed lieutenant to the admiral of France. In 1384 he became guardian of the treaties of Guyenne for the first time, a position he kept for thirty years.

Renaud took part in the sieges of Mortagne, Blaye and Bourg in 1406 and 1407. From 1408 to 1415 he participated in negotiations with the English. Special missions were entrusted to him, but he ceased diplomatic activity in 1417. He died in 1427.
