About Rep. James Madison Hite Beale, Sr.
U.S. Congressman. Born in Mount Airy, Virginia, he was educated in preparatory studies, he was successful in agricultural pursuits and was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1818-19). He was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses, serving (1833-37) and reelected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses, serving (1849-53). Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed agricultural pursuits until his death at age 80 in Putnam County, West Virginia.
