About Rep. José Francisco Chaves, (R-NMT)
José Francisco Chaves (June 27, 1833 – November 26, 1904) was a nineteenth century military leader, politician, lawyer and rancher from the New Mexico Territory. He served three times as Delegate from the New Mexico Territory in the United States House of Representatives, from 1865 to 1871. He was assassinated in 1903.

US Congressman. During the Civil War he served as an officer in the 1st New Mexico Volunteer Infantry, rising to Lieutenant Colonel, and participating in the February 1862 Battle of Valverde. He was elected to represent the New Mexico Territory in the United States House of Representatives, serving first from 1865 to 1867, then from 1869 to 1871.
