About Rev. Elijah Jeffcoat

Excerpt from: [ https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/G4JK-TL5]

"According to most family Bibles that I have seen, Rachel was a Beaver Creek native (mixed). This has not been proven, however, Elijah, her son, was listed as non-white in 1800 when married to Jerushia Hoover. It has been said that Rachel's father was either a Chavis or a Bolin who married a woman named Zelphir who was a Beaver Creek Siouan Indian of Orangeburg, SC."

Elijah's wife's maiden name, Hoover, is one of the surnames listed among the Beaver Creek tribe as well.

Bio notes for Rev. Elijah JEFFCOAT ELIJAH JEFCOAT, Youngest son of Samuel born March 11, 1782, in Lexington County, died September 23, 1857 in Pike County, Alabama. Elijah probably began his ministry as a young man around the year of 1800. In the minutes of a conference held at Jefcoat's Meeting House in 1820 he is listed as a local preacher. He performed the marriage ceremony uniting his nephew, Rev. John Monroe Jeffcoat and Lavenia Chrim (Crim) February 2, 1842.

Elijah, married ca. 1805, Jerushia Hoover b. ca. 1785 and d. Jan. 7, 1818. She was the daughter of John Hoover and believed to be a descendant of Johan Huber (Hoover), German immigrant mentioned in the early history of Orangeburg County, by A. S. Salley. Elijah and Jerushia were the parents of six children.

About eight months after the death of Jerushia, Elijah married Elizabeth McAdams born March 1801 (probably the daughter of Rev. Thomas McAdams who also preached at Jeffcoat's Meeting House in the early 1800's. Elijah and Elizabeth were the parents of fourteen children (possibly a fifteenth died without being recorded). They and most of their children moved to Pike County, Alabama in 1852, and are buried at an Old Camp Ground Cemetery where Elijah probably did his last preaching. Elijah had five sons who served in the Civil War.
