Scudder, Henry (b. EST 1583, d. BEF 31 MAY 1652) Note: The Reverend Henry Scudder matriculated at Cambridge in 1603 and received his M.A. from Christ's College in 1606. He was rector of Drayton, Oxfordshire, and in 1633, was presented by the King with the living Collingbourne-Ducis, Wiltshire. His first father-in-law, George Hunt, had been rector of Collingbourne for fifty years before him. George Hunt's father, John, had been sentenced to be burned at the stake for heresy during the reign of Queen Mary I.

Despite having been given a living by the King, Scudder was a Puritan through and through. he was among those summoned to the Westminster assembly of divines in June 1643, and the following year preached before the House of Commons at St. Margaret's in Westminster which sermon was printed by the request of the House.

Scudder was the author of many books including "The Christian's Daily Walke in Holy Securitie and Peace," a devotional work that would be issued again and again for the next two hundred years, last being printed in 1826. He also wrote "A Key of Heaven: the Lord's Prayer opened and applyed" in 1632, another devotional work that had wide acceptance long after his death.

Thomas Scudder emigrated to America in 1635 during the Great Migration. He was accompanied by his wife Elizabeth, and children, all of whom had been born in England. The family settled in Salem, Massachusetts. Thomas died there in 1657. In 1645 Thomas, his wife Elizabeth, their sons and daughter Elizabeth are identified as living in New England in the will of his brother, the Reverend Henry Scudder. The provisions in Rev. Scudder's will suggest that he was from Daranthin Kent County, southwest England, and it is assumed that Thomas camefrom that same area as well.

Will of Rev. Henry Scudder 1651 - From :Scudder Genforum In the Rev. Henry Scudder's will dated 1651: "my brother Thomas Scudder, and to all his sonnes and his daughter Elizabeth now in New Englandtwenty shillings a peece." This makes it clear that Henry is the brother of Thomas of Salem. Willis consistent with Thomas multiple sons, and a single daughter Elizabeth, as well as with the fact that in 1651 they were all in New England. This is a will of a different Henry Scudder of North Cray, Kent, Engl which is dated 1641 which mentions his wife Elizabeth Lowers Scudder
