About Rev. James Middleton
Contents of letter of recommendation from Rev. James Middleton's church in Scotland.
Dated April 6, 1838, it reads, “This is to certify that Mr. and Mrs. Middleton have been for some years consistent and respectable members of the first congregational Dhurch, Aberdeen, and are hereby recommended to the fellowship of any church of Christ where providences may order their lot. Mr. Middleton has held the offices of Deacon in this church and has been highly esteemed a a beloved Brother, in whom we have entire confidence. He has long taught a Sabbath evening school with much success. He has also instructed Bible classes of young people, has often addressed our weekly meeting in a way highly satisfactory and edifying to the people—he had been very useful in viciting the sich—instructing the ignorant and warning sinners ready to perish. He has occasionally preached in this neighbourhood and from his knowledge of the scriptures—his experience—his excellent character—and his being apt to teach—he is considered by us well fitted for preaching the glorius gospel of the Blessed God. It is the fervent prayer of the church that his removal to America may be over-ruled for much good—that he and his dear family may be blessed and made a blessing.
