"John Hill, preacher in Edinburgh; ord. to Second Charge 2nd Nov. 1738; pres. to First Charge by George II. 26th Jan., trans, and adm. 27th June 1753; died (after a tedious illness) 18th Nov. 1764. He marr.
Minister of St Andrews. d 1764 ‘a pious and an eloquent preacher, who enjoyed in a high degree the respect and esteem of his people’
(1) 14th Sept. 1743, Elizabeth (died 22nd May 1747), daugh. of John Gowdie, D.D., min. of Earlston, afterwards Principal of Edinburgh Univ., and had issue —

- John, LL.D., Professor of Humanity in Univs. of St Andrews and Edinburgh, born 27th April 1747, died 7th Dec. 1805
(2) 3rd Aug. 1749, Jean M'Cormick (died 28th March 1796), daugh. of his Predecessor, and had issue —
- George, D.D., afterwards min. of this parish, and Principal of St Mary's College, born 22nd May 1750
- Anne, born 26th April 1752 (marr. Matthew Murray, min. of North Berwick)
- Janet, born 30th Jan. 1754 (marr. John Cook, D.D., Professor of Moral Philosophy, St Andrews)
- Margaret, born 5th March 1756, died young; Jean, born 3rd Nov. 1757 (marr. James Macdonald, D.D., min. of Kemback)
- Joseph, born 26th May 1759, died 16th April 1760
- Henry David, D.D., Professor of Greek, St Andrews, born 21st April 1762
- Elizabeth Helen, born 4th Sept. 1763."
