About Rev.Joseph Arkwright
Rev Joseph Arkwright
* Born: 1791, Bakewell, Derbyshire 31
* Marriage: Anne Wigram in 1818
* Died: 1864 aged 73
Joseph became the vicar of Latton, Essex and rector of Thurlaston in Leicestershire. He married Anne Wigram in 1818 and they had 12 children. The family lived at Normanton Turville in Leicestershire.
Mark Hall was the principal manor in Latton, the parish to the west. Its lands provided most of the site for the post-war Harlow New Town. It had a long succession of important owners. Queen Elizabeth I was a guest at Mark Hall on three occasions ( 1571, 1576 and 1578) when its owner was James Altham, Sheriff of London (1557) and Essex (1570). In 1786 the estate was sold to Montague Burgoyne, brother of the general whose defeat at Saratoga in 1776 played a large part in the loss of the American colonies. The estate was sold in 1819 to Richard Arkwright, son of the man of the same name who invented the so-called 'water frame' which revolutionized the cotton spinning industry and helped usher in the 'Industrial Revolution'. From 1893 to 1943 the estate was let to members of the Gilbey family, which helps explain the fact that one of the dominant industries of the New Town in its early days was a Gilbey's distillery. The main building was destroyed by fire in 1947, and the service wing in 1960. The Victorian-era stable block survives, and is now the home of the Museum of Harlow. Two of the estate's gatehouses survive: East Park Lodge in London Road, opposite Fawbert and Barnard's School, and the north lodge on the at the intersection of Fesants Croft and the cycle path which follows the old Netteswell Road.
