The Westminster (California) Colony was founded in October of 1870 when the Reverend Lemuel Peterson Webber obtained about 6,500 acres of land on which he dreamed of building a temperance colony for Presbyterians. The colony was named Westminster in honor of Reverend Webber's admiration for the Westminster Assembly of 1642/43, which prescribed the basic concepts of the Presbyterian Church.
