Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Morton Wakefield. He served as a drummer in the War of 1812. He became a Methodist minister in 1820 and married Elizabeth Hough in 1821. In addition to being a minister, he was also a tailor, singing teacher, and a state legislator. He published several collections of sacred music, including "The Minstrel of Zion" in 1845. He wrote the music to the religious tune "Fatherland" in 1843. He was very active throughout his life, well into his early 90s.
