Jewish Chronicle November 1887 We regret to announce the death, on Thursday morning, of the Rev.Solomon Levy. He was foe thirty years Reader of the Borough Synagogue, having filled the position some years before the present building was erected.
For about the same period he was more widely known as one of the principal Mohelim of London, and he was for many years the Secretary of the " Initiation ' Society. He had performed upwards of 20,000 circumcisions, the major portion of which were for the ohildren of the poor and quite gratuitous. In acknowledgment of these services be was presented, in 1880, with a handsome testimonial consisting of an illuminated address, and a massive silver salver, weighing forty ounces, together with a kiddush Cup and Spice Boxes from his among the working classes." He was a member of the Committees of Soup Kitchen, Jewish Home and Sabbath Meals Society. Mr. Levy was also secretary of several of the minor charities, and to nearly every appeal issued to the community in behalf of individuals his name was attached. In many ways,
he evinced great sympathy with the poor amongst whom he dwelt. He leaves a widow and large family to mourn his lose. His eldest son is Mr. Abraham Levy, Head Master of the Old Castle Street Board School, and among his other sons are the Rev. Joseph Levy B.A., Minister of the Bristol Congregation, and the Rev. Myer S. Levy, Minister at Oaklands, California.
