After leaving Duloe, he worked in the parish of Tolland. On his father's death in 1857, he took up residence at Beaumont House, Plymouth. He contributed large sums to the restoration of Duloe and Charles (Plymouth), and many other churches, and in addition to the sum of £3,000 which he subscribed towards the building of St Jude's Church and tower, gave the organ, which is one of the finest in Plymouth. He was a generous benefactor to countless good causes in the Plymouth area. He held the Bewes family entailed estates, consisting mainly of properties in Plymouth, Torquay, Paignton, Exeter and Cornwall.
