About Rev. Thomas Partridge

Not the same as Thomas Partridge, of Lenham

Rev. Thomas Partridge, the perpetutal vicar (for life) of the parishes of Sutton-Valence, Lenham and Wiching (q.v. Witching) southeast and east of Maidstone, in Kent, and Thomas' apparent 1st wife Joan [NOT Joanne Burford, who was Ralph's step-mother]. The Son Ralph Partridge was baptized as "Rodolphus Partridge" Apr. 12, 1579 at St. Mary the Virgin church at Sutton-Valence [aka the Town of Sutton], in county Kent, England.

OK, I took some time to find what I can on Thomas Partrich and Elizabeth Sibbell and what I have found has convinced me that it was unlikely that they were the parents of Rev. Thomas Partrich. I also think it was unlikely that his wife's name was either Patience or Joanne. For now, I think Thomas is where the line ends; and begins with him and his four sons and one daughter. Here's what I put together on for his file:

Rev. Thomas Partrich

  • b. about 1555 in Sutton Valence, Kent, England doubtfully to Thomas Partrich and Elizabeth Sibbell
  • o. Clergyman
  • d. 8 Jul 1605 in Wichling, Kent, England

Source material regarding the birth and parents of Rev. Thomas Partrich is scant. Most who name his parents usually claim that he was the son of Thomas Partrich and Elizabeth Sibbell. Sources from the History of Parliament show that this couple had a son named William Partrich who became a public figure by 1565 and later a member of the House of Commons. If 1533 is an accurate date of birth, then Thomas and Elizabeth would have been almost thirty years of age. Rev. Thomas Partrich was born twenty-two years later and they would have been 51 and 47, not inconceivable for child-bearing, but certainly past the norm. In addition, this author has not been able to find any reliable documentation linking Rev. Thomas Partrich with his supposed brother, not to mention the couple many have presumed to be his parents. The county of Kent seems to be the greatest connection they actually share, thus leaving the conclusion of this author that the parentage of Thomas Partrich remains unknown.

Many have stated that his wife was named Patience; others have stated Joanne. More than likely, the name Patience became associated with Thomas in confusion with his son (Ralph) wife, Patience. At this point, it seems best to wait before assigning a name to his wife.

Whether his parents were Thomas and Elizabeth or not the young Thomas was born around 1555 and grew up in Kent. He received his B.A. from Oxford on 29 January 1570/1.[1] Thomas eventually became an Anglican vicar of the Church during the last half of Queen Elizabeth's reign, first serving at St. Mary the Virgin of Sutton Valence (Kent) England and continued there until 1581. He served as vicar of St. Mary Church of Lenham (Kent) England from 1581 until his death in 1605 and rector of nearby St. Margaret Church of Wichling (Kent) England from 1585, likewise, until his death.

It seems that records have been examined stating that his son, Ralph, was christened on 12 April 1579. This son also appears in the will of his brother Gervase who also names two other brothers and one sister.

  • ii. Rev. Rodulphus Ralph€ Partrich, b. Apr 1579, Sutton Valence, Kent, England m. about 1615 to Patience in England d. about Apr 1658, Duxbury, Plymouth, MA

  • [2] The will of Gervase (11 Jun 1647; proved 20 Aug 1647) mentions several family members. In it, he makes mention of his wife, Katherine, and their two children, Robert and Elizabeth. He mentions Ralph and his two daughters Mary and Elizabeth in addition to their husbands John Marshall and Thomas Thacher. He mentions his brother Randolph and his three sons, James, John, and Samuel. His sister Elizabeth, wife of the late David Fidge, is mentioned as are their children, James, Jeremy, and Mary. Finally, he also mentions his late brother James and his brother’s surviving son, James. SeeThe New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 47 (New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1893), 279.
  • [3] Elizabeth Fidge (misspelled Tidge in some transcriptions) is also mentioned in the will of her brother, Ralph.
