He went south around 1832 and was President of St. Mary's College. He was an ardent supporter of the Southern cause and was chosen to edit schoolbooks when the Northern schoolbooks were taboo. It is said he did not marry, but the family did not keep up a correspondence with him because of his sympathy with the South.
