About Reverend Charles Edward Driberg
Biography
Birth Taken from burial record as 1812[1]
He served in the Ceylon Rifles in the Ceylon Regiment of the British Army, achieving Captain, and was discharged in 1831. This record also gives his birth date as 3 Oct 1812[2]
He obtained a scholarship at Bishop's College, Calcutta, was ordained Deacon in 1835 and Priest in 1837.
Marriage In 1836 he married Sophia Ann French in Fort William, Calcutta, India[3], Charles was resident in Baripore, India at the time.
Sophia Ann French was the daughter of Lt-Col. Cudbert French of H.M. 28th Regiment of Foot[4] and[5], and they had eight children.
He was stationed at Barripore from 1838-53 and Tollyginge from 1854 until his death.
Death He died of acute jaundice on 7 October 1871 and was buried on 8 October 1871 at the General Episcopal Cemetery or Burial Ground Chowringhee, Calcutta, India[6]. He was described as a Senior Missionary with the SPG Society.
