Reverend George Bannatine, Min. of Wynd Church, Glasgow

Biographical Summary

George Bannatyne, son of James B., min. of Trinity Parish, Edinburgh ; educated at Univ. of Edinburgh ; licen. by Presb. of Edinburgh 15th Oct. 1740 ; ord. to Craigie 18th July 1745 ; pres. by the Magistrates and Town Council. The Presb., on account of opposition by the General Session, refused to sustain the presentation. This decision was reversed by the Synod, and on appeal, by the General Assembly 31st May 1764 ; adm. 18th Oct. 1764; died 9th Sept. 1769. He is said to have been a man of much wit, humour, and good sense. He marr. 27th April 1761, Elizabeth (died 1802), daugh. of Richard Cunningham, min. of Symington, Ayrshire, and had issue —

• Anna, born 25th March 1762, died 23rd Dec. 1809;
• Katherine, born 3rd Sept. 1763, died 29th May 1765;
• James, apprentice W.S. 1780, born 1st July 1765 ;
• Richard, born 21st July 1768;
• George, buried 19th Oct. 1769.
