The families interred in this graveyard are among those who settled central Connecticut after the Church negotiated the land from Owanec, after the death of his father Uncas. Uncas was the Sachem of the Pequot-Mohegans. Owanec was his oldest son. The graveyard is located along the Old Post Road in Old Ashford. It is also near the old Ashford Knowlton Academy. The remains of the foundation of the old church are nearby.
The celebrated patriot Nathan Hale (Coventry) is Rev. James Hale's grand nephew. The Reverend Hales' brothers and their sons Samuel and Richard prospered in land trading and became benefactors of Yale. Five Hale families relocated to Halifax Center, Vermont after the Revolutionary War.
