He was the son of John Peabody and Mary Head. He married #1 Mary Hazelton on Jan. 19, 1773. He married #2 Elizabeth Smith (widow of Rev. John Shaw) on Dec. 8, 1795 in Atkinson, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire. tombstone inscription:
"Rev. Stephen Peabody died May 23, 1819 in his 78 year He was ordained the first minister in the town of Atkinson, Nov 25, 1772 and until his death sustained the office with dignity, possessed the love and confidence of his people and ardently sought the interest of his charge and of mankind. He was a man of good talents, a sound devine, a faithful minster, a Christian in word and deed. He was to his last a friend of those in distress, the patron of merit and literature and served as chaplain in the Army of the Revolution." (Note: this inscription is on the north side of the monument; the other sides of this monument have inscriptions for other members of the Peabody family).
