About Reverend William Arthur
Father of US President Chester Arthur. Born in Ireland, he emigrated to Canada as a young man. In 1821, he married Malvina Stone, and they had 9 children, with Chester being their fifth child. William Arthur became a Baptist preacher in 1828 and pastored 11 churches in Vermont and New York in the years following. He was also a co-founder of the New York Antislavery Society.
