Mormon Pioneer:
"...we moved up to Winter Quarters, where apostle George A. Smith’s company was organized, with which we started for the valley on July 14, 1849. We had the usual experience of those days; our cattle stampeding, some of them starting back, when it would take two or three days to get them. We had some heavy rain storms, and on the third of October, near the South Pass, we were exposed to the fury of a heavy snow storm, sixty head of cattle perished, father [Robert Berrett] lost two oxen and one cow. We arrived in Salt Lake City on the 28th of October, two years after the pioneers..."
