About Richard Cheney, of Kent
This is a fairly improbable profile on the face of it. Cheneys in Kent had become thin on the ground, the grand family of Cheney of Shurland going extinct with the death in 1578 of Henry "the Extravagant Lord Cheney" (in Toddington, Bedfordshire, for the aggrandizement of which property he had sacrificed all his other holdings).
There were Cheneys in Higham down to 1676, descended from Simon Cheney, of Cralle, in Sussex, second son of Sir Richard Cheney, of Shurland. But they don't seem to have had any connection to the Cheneys of London, who may have come from any of a dozen or so Counties.
